Getting Started with the BlackBerry 10 Compass

The digital compass on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone works like a regular compass, but also includes additional features. For example, you can choose whether the compass points to true north or magnetic north. The compass also works in any direction or orientation, including upside down (try it!).
Here’s a quick overview of how to use the compass.
True North or Magnetic North?
When you open the compass, you can choose to navigate based on either true north or magnetic north. Magnetic north, which is what a standard compass points to, can be influenced by several factors and is not constant. True north, or geographical north, is what you would see on a paper map and is constant. If you would prefer to navigate based on true north (for example, if you are using your compass to follow a map) you must turn on location based services.
To select a navigation method while using the compass app, do one the following:
- To navigate using true north, towards the bottom of the screen, set the switch to On.
- To navigate using magnetic north, towards the bottom of the screen, set the switch to Off.
Troubleshooting & Interference
- If the compass doesn’t point north, ensure your smartphone isn’t near any metal objects such as magnets or electronics.
- If you are shown a button that says Interference, as per the following screenshot, move your smartphone away from metal objects and proceed to flip and tilt the smartphone until the interference screen disappears.

- In order to navigate using true north, location-based services must be enabled on your smartphone. To enable location-based services if this option has been turned off previously, tap Settings on your Home screen followed by Location Based Services, and set the Location Services switch to On.

Instagram’s Android App Ported to BlackBerry 10

If you’re a big Instagram fan but you have a BlackBerry 10 device, which Instagram does not support, you’re in luck. An older version of Instagram has been ported to BlackBerry 10 and is now available for download. Keep in mind that this is not a BlackBerry 10 app, but rather an Android app that can be sideloaded onto your BlackBerry 10 device. The experience isn’t great and there are some definite bugs if you run Instagram on BB10, but this is a good solution if you want Instagram and don’t want to switch to iOS or Android.
You can download the Android version of Instagram to your computer using the link below and then you can load it onto your BlackBerry 10 device. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, though. There may be issues that arise when sideloading an unauthorized application onto your device.

Press Release: Wikitude Teams Up with Zalando at the Geneva Motor Show

Wikitude, a longtime supporter of the BlackBerry platform, has just announced a partnership with fashion retailer Zalando. This partnership will utilize the Wikitude Augmented Reality platform to merge fashion, travel, and augmented reality in a way that we have never seen before. Read on below and past the break for all the details of this partnership in the Press Release.

Zalando scans fashion with Wikitude augmented reality at 83rd annual Geneva Motor Show
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, March 05 2013 – Wikitude, the world’s leading augmented reality solutions provider has recently partnered with the European online fashion retailer Zalando and the automotive design and concept firm Rinspeed, to produce an augmented reality dashboard component featured at the 83rd annual Geneva Motor Show.
“As an innovative eCommerce company, mobile commerce is not just a thing of the future for us – our Zalando app already enables customers to place orders from their smartphones. With our fashion concept car, we are going one step further and expressing our vision of mobile shopping development over the next 5 years, when customers can place orders from their car as easily as from their sofa using their iPad,’ explained Christian Meermann, Chief Marketing Officer at Zalando.
Recognizing and trusting Wikitude’s industry leading technology, Zalando provides visitors with an augmented reality component in their Rinspeed based concept car. The concept auto features a duo of iPad minis attached to the internal vanity mirrors that incorporate a forward thinking augmented reality display. These iPad minis feature a customized version of Wikitude tailored specifically to Zalando’s specifications. The augmented reality display is aimed at various fashion forms that feature clothing and accessories available at zalando.com. Attendees of the 83rd Geneva Motor Show may explore the Rinspeed concept car and test Wikitude’s features for themselves.
“The future is our focus and we believe mobile shopping is a part of this. Through connectivity and innovative technology, what is impossible today will soon be possible,” stated Rinspeed CEO Frank M Rinderknecht.
Utilizing Wikitude’s computer vision technology, the display will recognize the Zalando clothing and accessories as triggers, and launch an interactive display for users to further explore the apparel. Using GPS the package is delivered automatically to the integrated package station in the boot. The outfits can then be tried on in the mobile changing rooms and the Fashion Box has plenty of room for your favourite outfits. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Zalando car without a signature ‘scream of joy’ horn to grab attention. While fashion forms are in use at the Geneva Motor Show, the customized Wikitude app is also able to recognize similar clothing and accessories on printed billboards, posters, displays, etc.
The Zalando – Rinspeed – Wikitude concept car is located at stand 6240 and has been created to provide real-world working concepts about what the future of the automobile might hold.
“We were thrilled when Zalando first approached us to develop this innovative concept and vision with them,” said Andy Gstoll, CMO at Wikitude. “The combination of mobility, connectivity and augmented reality has the potential of changing the way we will shop for fashion in the future.”
For further information, Zalando is available at +49 30 200 088 585.

Better Balance Equals Better BYOD Living

Does your company allow you to use your personal smartphone for work? If so, that’s great! A good Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, program can be your best friend. It allows you to carry a single mobile device for all your company and personal messaging. Plus, since this is your personal smartphone, you can keep your social media apps, photos, videos, and more in the palm of your hand. My buddy Luke writes about BYOD programs and our tool called BlackBerry Balance on the Inside BlackBerry for Business Blog, and I’d like to talk about how companies and employees can get the most out of this type of program. Check out the video below for how it works.
[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]
As employees, we reap the benefits of a BYOD program, but don’t often see the potential shortcomings. For instance, what happens to your personal data when you leave your job? Obviously the “work data” on the device is what’s important to your company, but for the sake of security, your company may wipe the entire device upon your departure.
This is where BlackBerry Balance really shines. Your work data and personal data are kept separate, right down to the DNA of the BlackBerry 10 device. If you move on in your career or lose your device, BlackBerry Balance allows you to wipe or erase one set of data without affecting the other set. Your sales charts and cat memes stay in separate buckets, just like nature intended. How’s that for work/life balance?
How will you use this technology? Shout out in the comments below!
